Is our generation special?

Looking back thousands of years to the Egyptian, Indian, Roman or Chinese civilizations we see societies that functioned socially more or less similarly to our own.
People played, joked, ate, worked, read, married all in the same sort of ways that we do now.
So much so that Indian civilization decided that we all had past and future lives and that the key to happiness is not anything in the material world but rather complete disconnection from it.
Are we at a moment where this might change?
Where we will fundamentally evolve as a species through combining with artificial intelligence?
Or are we just another incarnation of Alexander the Great?
A bright but ultimately short lived phase in history.
